Broccoli and Prostate Cancer

In a recent study at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York, researchers found that eating cruciferous vegetables, which includes broccoli, showed reduced prostate cancer risk.  The study showed that eating two or more servings per month of cruciferous vegetables gave this protection.  I eat more than two servings per month and I suspect most people do, if they like brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli.

Statins for Prostate health

In tests with Statins, a lowering cholesterol drug, researchers found that in 1200 men taking statins, their PSA levels dropped.  PSA is a blood marker that indicates prostate health.  A high PSA points to a higher risk of developing prostate cancer.   Doctors were enthusiastic about the possibility of using this drug for reducing PSA levels.

Other naturopathic doctors were not ready to accept this finding as the best method of lowering PSA levels, because it’s a new discovery and it’s a drug with side effect.  Also there are more natural ways to lower PSA levels without the use of drugs.

Melatonin is not just for improving sleep.  It was thought that Melatonin was only produced by the pineal gland, but it is produced throughout the body.  It is a powerful antioxidant and has been found to be a potent anti-inflammatory and protects tissue from injuries.

As you age you pineal gland whithers away, leaving you with a lack of Melatonin.  Melatonin is needed for long term health of your brain and heart, to improve out come with cancer, and to protect against heartburn and ulcers.

Typical doses of Melatonin are from .3mg to 5 mg for sleep.  Start with 1mg and increase for more effect until you reach 5 mg.  Studies show that for Melatonin to have an effect on cancer it requires from 3 – 50 mg per day.  At these doses, check with your doctor for his recommendation.
