Rudy Silva, Natural Nutritionist

Just like drugs certain herbal supplements should not be taken forever.  The amount of time you should you should take it will differ with each person.  It will be different and will depend on they type of herbal supplement, what you are trying to achieve with it, and the responses that you have when using it.

In addition you have all the other factors that come into play, like age, weight, diet, alcohol consumption, drug use, caffeine use, activity level, and health condition.  All of these factors make determining how long to take an herbal supplement quite complex.

But since most people take herbal supplement without considering these factors, here are some guidelines to consider when taking a new supplement:

  1. Take a small amount the first day to see your reaction to it.

  2. Don’t take other supplement for a couple days to see if you can tell the effects you feel with the new supplement

  3. Use a small amount if you use drugs.

  4. If you use an herbal supplement for 3-4 months then take 7-8 days off from using it.

  5. If you take more than one supplement, you can combine more of them if you take a lower amount of each.

  6. Because there are so many herbal supplements and formulas, before you start taking them, check on the Internet to see if there are any special precautions that you need to take or know about.

One good rule is to always talk with your doctor about the herbal supplements you plan to take for specific condition, especially if you are taking drugs.  Many times a doctor is not familiar with the supplement or remedy, but at least you can get an idea about what he might think about the supplement.
