Are You Diabetic and Use Cinnamon?
Rudy SilvaMost people think that if they are not diabetic they don’t need to worry about diabetes. Well, people with type II diabetes were once part of that group, that didn’t have to worry. Type 2 diabetes is an illness where the body’s insulin loses is ability to regulate sugar levels. Sugar levels must not go below or above a certain level and if they do, body functions start to deteriorate. Insulin, which is released by the pancreas and by the brain, keeps sugar level from becoming high. This is done when insulin connects with cells and opens a cell door for sugar or blood glucose to enter. Blood glucose gets used up by cells and is taken out of the blood causing blood glucose to decrease and become normal.
If insulin is ineffective in reduce blood glucose, excess blood glucose in the arteries forms certain molecules that become destructive to many body organs and blood vessel walls. This process eventually causes premature aging, blindness, loss of limb, and premature death.
If you want to live to ripe old age, then you will want to maintain a good blood glucose level. More studies have come out showing blood glucose levels can be controlled by using cinnamon. In one study, one teaspoon used in morning cereals or other foods can provide your body with protection against sugar levels rising.
Cinnamon and diabetes
But cinnamon has a long history of being used as a natural remedy. However, as a spice more people use it not knowing the tremendous benefits it has for health and long life. In 2701 B.C., cinnamon was being used for fever, diarrhea, and menstrual issues. In more recent times, it has been used as antispasmodic, anti-diarrheal, appetite stimulant, and, of course, a spice added to all sorts of deserts.
In 1990, Dr. Richard Anderson, chemist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and his colleagues found that apple pie cinnamon boosted insulin’s activity by at least 20 times. They found that the active ingredient in cinnamon was a compound called procyanidins. These procyanidins are natural polymers, which consist of polyphenols that we know as bioflavonoids. What all this means is that cinnamon has water soluble chemicals that boosts insulin’s ability to do its work.
New studies and research finds why cinnamon has been used as a remedy for 1000’s of years. It has been shown to reduce triglycerides and LDL, preserve cognitive function, reduce blood pressure, and fight lymphoma and leukemia cancer.
